Colonial Period: Were the Puritans Selfish or Selfless?

The Puritans came to America to purify the church of England. There, they established a city upon a hill, where they would be an example of how to live right in God's eyes. They also believed that if they obeyed God and lived right, He would provide land for them to settle by eliminating all obstacles, even the native indians living there. 
So, I believe the puritans were selfishly claiming land that wasn't theirs for God
